Renewal of Indian Education System in the New Decade

“Just as the twig is bent, the tree’s inclined”- Alexander Pope. The importance of education in our lives is quite similar to what Alexander Pope states. Thus, it comes down to the question how much does the government ensure to build an ideal Education System for its youth who are the future of the nation? This should not only take care of the aspirations of the people but also cater to the growth and economic development of the country.

India Education System- The Revelation of the “5+3+3+4 System”

The revolution in the new structure of Indian Education System brings into the fold the pre-existing playschools within the ambit of ‘formal education’.

On July 28, 2020, the Government unveiled the new National Education Policy that brings out the restructure of school education by setting 3-6 years as pre-school age and lessen the emphasis on board exams, among other changes. 

One of the plenary reforms is the transition from the half-a-century-old (10+2) format to “5+3+3+4” structure. 

The policy sights to transform the tautological structure from the existing (10 years + 2 years) to a more inclusive conversion from foundational to the secondary stage.

The new Indian Education system will have 12 years of schooling with three years of Anganwadi or pre-schooling

What is this “5+3+3+4” System?

1. Till date, students start formal education at the age of 3 by means of playschools. After which, they are moved to a ‘school’ which is Kindergarten. Class 1 and 2 which are followed by 12 years of secondary education and then higher secondary education. 

2.  This new Indian Education System structure just proposes to divide the earlier structure into apprehensive developmental stages of the child, i.e., early childhood, school years, and then the second stage.

The Age-wise Break-up of the 5+3+3+4 Education System. 

The Age Group of 3-8 years: The Foundational Years

1.  The foundational years of the Indian education system will consist of 3 years of pre-school or Anganwadi education. 

2. Then 2 years of primary education, i.e., class 1 and 2. It will be for the children of age group 3-8 years. Then there are classes 1 and 2 for students of age-group from 6 to 8 years. 

3. In these fundamental years, the focus will be kept on the development of language skills, teaching by the activity-based and play-based curriculum.

5. The NCERT has decided to develop a National Curricular and Pedagogical Framework for Early Childhood Care and Education (NCPFECCE) for students up to the age of 8. 

6. The ECCE will also be delivered through a remarkably expanded system of Anganwadis and pre-schools.

The Age group of 8-11 years: The Preparatory Stage

1. The National Indian Education Policy has covered the preparatory stage which will provide education from classes 3 to 5.

2. It will cover the students of the age group from 8 to 11 years. 

3. This preparatory stage would focus more on experiential learning, discovery, activity-based, and interactive learning in the classroom. 

The Age Group of 11-14 Years: The Middle-School Stage

1. The National Indian Education Policy has covered the preparatory stage which will provide education from classes 3 to 5.

2. It will cover the students of the age group from 8 to 11 years. 

3. This preparatory stage would focus more on experiential learning, discovery, activity-based, and interactive learning in the classroom. 

The Secondary Stage for the 4 years

1. The Secondary Stage will cover school education from class 9 to 12 in two phases. 

2. The first phase will be from 9-10 and then the second phase from 11-12. 

3. This stage includes a multidisciplinary study where the students would have the option to pick and choose any set of subjects from the provided structure according to their aspirations.

4. The focus would be extremely on critical thinking. There will be flexibility which allows the students to opt for subjects of their own interests which will even include technical and arts.

Indian Education System

Working of Undergraduate and Postgraduate Streams 

1. The UG curriculum will consist of 3 or 4 years with appropriate certification and multiple exit options within this span.

For example-

i. A Certificate after one year, 

ii. Advanced Diploma after 2 years, 

iii. Bachelor’s Degree after 3 years,

iv.  Bachelor’s with Research after 4 years.

2. An Academic Bank of Credit will be established for digitally storing academic credits that have been earned and they will be counted in the final degree. 

3. Also, Multidisciplinary Education and Research Universities at par with IITs and IIMs will be set up across the entire country.

The privilege of Free Schooling Up to Class 12

1. The draft policy as issued by the Indian Education Policy also proposes to extend the free and compulsory schooling policy from pre-school up to Class 12.

2.  In the earlier system, this very provision which comes under the Right to Education was only available from Class 1 to Class 8. But now it starts right from Pre-school till Class 12.

3. Also in addition to all this, the draft provides a suggestion of providing a “nutritious” breakfast in the mid-day meal for the students of pre-school and primary school.

This can only be ensured by imparting proper education to the masses and students so that they exercise their franchise without fear or favour. This would indeed make them master of their destiny.
